The Making of Afghan Kelim rugs

The making of Afghan Kelim rugs is a remarkable process that takes place in the Maymanah province of Afghanistan, where local Turkmen and Uzbek women produce these works of art in their homes. The looms used to weave the rugs are large and simple, requiring 4-5 kilograms of wool yarn to make a 3-4 square metre Kilim. Afghan women who weave carpets to supplement their family income also take care of the household chores and provide for their children's education. From a young age they learn the art of handloom weaving, which is an important part of Afghan culture and which they practise of their own free will, and is therefore not considered forced child labour.

Men are rarely involved in this activity, so they do not contribute to the maintenance of this tradition. The carpet weavers receive a regular payment from the trader for their work on the finished part of the carpet, which stabilises their financial situation. Even when guests arrive, they do not stop weaving completely, as the female members of the visiting community often join in the weaving, strengthening community cohesion and cultural identity.

A medium sized Chobi Kilim rug, approximately 150x200 cm, can take 2-4 months to complete. Once the weaving is finished, the trader takes the Kilim for cleaning and thorough washing. It is then dried in the hot sun or, in case of bad weather, by fans. These Kelim carpets are then shipped to CarpetDepo's warehouse in Europe, from where they are delivered to customers in the European Union countries within 3-5 working days. We hope that you will appreciate these ethnic Kelim rugs, which are not only the result of a long and diligent process, but also embody an ancient cultural tradition.

Authentic Kelim rugs are special not only for their physical beauty but also for their cultural value. In our decades of experience, we have personally visited the homes of many carpet weavers to ensure that weaving is not associated with forced child labour. At CarpetDepo, it is of paramount importance to us that production is carried out in a sustainable way that respects human rights and does not support families involved in the production process where children are forced to work instead of learning. These medium size wool Kelim rugs are the perfect choice for the living room or bedroom, as they are not only practical and durable, but also add aesthetic value to the room, creating a cosy and elegant atmosphere. Hand woven rugs, with their unique patterns and colours, can create a special atmosphere in any home.

How to care for Chobi Kilim rug?

Although the care of a Chobi Kilim rug does not require any special knowledge, it is essential to follow certain steps in order to maintain its aesthetic value and durability over time.

  • If a Kilim becomes soiled, it should not be allowed to dry; it is advisable to intervene immediately. For less severe stains, a slightly dampened wipe may be effective. Take care not to over-wet the rug.
  • As an alternative, a carpet cleaning foam is an excellent option for cleaning wool carpets and is easily available in shops. Before using the foam, test it on a small area of the rug to make sure it won't damage the material or colour of the Kelim.
  • For more serious stains, or if you want a more thorough cleaning after several years, it is recommended to use the services of an expert carpet cleaner who will provide professional cleaning.
  • Regular vacuuming and spot cleaning will help to maintain the condition and appearance of your Kelim rug for a long time. When vacuuming, use the lowest setting on the machine as Kelim rugs do not absorb dust, so cleaning is quick and easy.
  • Occasionally, it is also recommended to clean the area under Kilim to prevent moth damage.
  • Care should be taken not to place heavy furniture on Kilim, as this may damage the Kilim weave over time.

It is also advisable to use these cleaning techniques for Afghan Kelim rugs and other ethnic Kelim rugs to keep the rug in your living room or bedroom well cared for and clean.

It is important to note that an old custom was to hang Kilim rugs and clean them by beating them with a duster stick, but this method can be harmful to hand woven Kelim rugs as well as any other hand-made rugs.

The handcrafted Afghan Kelim rugs

Handcrafted Kelim rugs, are popular all over the world for their exceptional quality. The distinctive feature of Chobi Kelim rugs is that they are denser and more compact than other ethnic Kelim rugs, which is attributed to their unique weaving method. This weaving process allows Afghan Kelim rugs to be thinner and quicker to weave than knotted rugs. The authentic Kelim rug designs are antique in style, but also include modern designs to meet contemporary needs. Chobi Kelim rugs are particularly popular because their colour scheme blends harmoniously with most home interiors and they stand out with their affordable prices. Chobi Kilim rugs are versatile in the home: they can be hung on the wall as a tapestry or placed conventionally on the floor. These colourful Kilim rugs can be an excellent choice for the living room, where they can set the mood of the place. Ethnic rugs have a special artistic value that stands out not only for their aesthetic appeal, but also for their historical and cultural significance. The hand woven Kelim rugs are a tribute to Afghan traditions and craftsmanship, making each piece unique and distinctive. Made from natural wool Kilim rugs add a cosy and welcoming atmosphere to any living room or bedroom.
