If you are also putting a lot of focus into decorating your home, then you must have thought about buying a luxury handmade rug. These high quality rugs can last you a long time, as they are often a lifetime investment. Afghan rugs are not only beautiful and elegant, they also stand out for their extreme durability. This type of oriental rug is a nomadic rug and has been a treasure of the Afghans for centuries. Afghan rugs are made using the Gheordes knotting technique, which means double knotting. This technique ensures that your Afghan carpet will last and remain beautiful for decades, even in the most heavily used rooms. The production process is entirely handmade, using approximately 2.5-3 kilograms of wool per square metre. The dyes are made from natural raw materials, and the recipes are old family secrets. The most difficult task is the knotting, followed by a thorough shearing and washing process. Afghan carpets have a wide variety of designs, including elements that date back thousands of years, such as the "elephant foot" motif. This type of oriental rug can be a great choice if you want to spice up your home with a bit of oriental atmosphere. Afghan carpet is known for its warm colours and excellent wool, making it ideal for a bedroom or even the hallway. Plus, the wool rug is easy to clean and allergen-free, so the whole family can enjoy the comfort of a luxurious rug. A small sized Afghan rug also looks great in the bedroom, especially around the bed where it adds a cosy feel to the room. These characteristics mean that a handmade rug can be placed in any room. So, if you want to bring an oriental atmosphere into your home and add a truly unique piece to your interior, buying an Afghan rug is guaranteed to be a good choice. If you want one of these beautiful handmade oriental rugs, don't hesitate to order it today! A wide range of Afghan rugs awaits you on the CarpetDepo rug webshop page, and if it doesn't fit your room, don't worry, CarpetDepo will take care of the return shipping, which is free of charge.

How is an Afghan rug made?

The process of making Afghan rugs takes place in northern Afghanistan, where the tradition of oriental rugs continues to flourish. The production of Afghan rugs is a complex process that begins with the preparation of the sheep's fleece. The quality of the pastures where the sheep graze has a direct effect on the fineness of the wool. The cleanest, greenest pastures produce the best quality wool. After the sheep are sheared, the wool is separated into two parts: the outer layer, which is in contact with the outside world, is used to make most Afghan rugs, while the part close to the sheep's body is used for the finer woven Afghan rugs. The wool yarns take several days to make. The dyeing is done with natural materials that are boiled in pots for long hours. The yarns are then dried, which can take days in the summer and fan drying in the winter. Weaving is traditionally done at home (Karkhana) in Afghanistan and in workshops in Pakistan. The warp yarns are first inserted into the weaving looms, where the hand knotting is done. After shearing, Afghan carpets are washed several times to prevent the colour from bleeding. Finally, when the rugs are properly dried, they are ready for export. Our representatives in Afghanistan and Pakistan collect the finished products and ship them in bulk to our carpet warehouse in Budapest, where we have been selling them to our online customers since 1993. All our Afghan carpets come with a guarantee.

Two popular types of Afghan rugs

Two of the most popular carpet types of Afghanistan are Khal Mohammadi and Kargai rugs. Afghan rugs are hand-knotted by Turkmen people in the northern part of Afghanistan. In some cases, this type of oriental rug is also made in Pakistan by Turkmen who have migrated to Pakistan. The primary colours are dark red or brown in various shades. Many people think that the denser and thicker the oriental rug, the better and more durable it is. In handmade oriental carpet, thickness is a matter of shearing. Durability is a result of the density of the knotting and the quality of the material used. With their variety of patterns and colours, they give your home a unique feel as bedroom rugs or hallway rugs.

How to clean a handmade Afghan rug?

Minor stains can be easily removed from Afghan rugs without any specialist knowledge. With a slightly damp cloth, it can be easily cleaned. For larger stains, you can use a commercially available wool rug cleaning product. It is worth trying cleaning a small area first to make sure that the cleaner product will not damage the wool or colour of the rug. Afghan rugs can be vacuumed at any time, but only in the direction of the fibre, as all Oriental rugs are usually vacuumed. The worst enemy of wool rugs is moths, so it is a good idea to ventilate them frequently, especially in summer, and to move the small Afghan rug occasionally to prevent moths from laying eggs underneath. For larger stains or occasional major cleaning, we recommend contacting professional carpet cleaning companies. Do not place heavy furniture on the rug as this can damage the rug over time. The biggest advantage of handmade rug is that it can be restored.
