How is an Afghan carpet made?

The process of making Afghan carpets takes place in northern Afghanistan, where the tradition of oriental carpets continues to flourish. The production of Afghan rugs is a complex process that begins with the preparation of the sheep's fleece. The quality of the pastures where the sheep graze has a direct effect on the fineness of the wool. The cleanest, greenest pastures produce the best quality wool. After the sheep are sheared, the wool is separated into two parts: the outer layer, which is in contact with the outside world, is used to make most Afghan rugs, while the part close to the sheep's body is used for the finer woven Afghan rugs. The wool yarns take several days to make. The dyeing is done with natural materials that are boiled in pots for long hours. The yarns are then dried, which can take days in the summer and fan drying in the winter. Weaving is traditionally done at home (Karkhana) in Afghanistan and in workshops in Pakistan. The warp yarns are first inserted into the weaving looms, where the hand knotting is done. After shearing, Afghan carpets are washed several times to prevent the colour from bleeding. Finally, when the rugs are properly dried, they are ready for export. Our representatives in Afghanistan and Pakistan collect the finished products and ship them in bulk to our carpet warehouse in Budapest, where we have been selling them to our online customers since 1993. All our Afghan carpets come with a guarantee.

Two popular types of Afghan rugs

The two most popular types of Afghan woollen carpet are Khal Mohammadi and Kargai. Afghan carpets are hand knotted by Turkmen in the northern part of Afghanistan. In some cases, this type of oriental carpet is also made in Pakistan by Turkmen who have migrated to Pakistan. The primary colours are dark red or brown in various shades. Many people believe that the denser and thicker the carpet, the better and more durable it is. In handmade oriental carpets, thickness is a matter of shearing. Durability is the result of the density of the knotting and the quality of the material. With their variety of patterns and colours, they give your home a unique feel as a living room or bedroom carpet. For hallways we have runner carpets that are less wide but longer.

How do I clean an Afghan handmade carpet?

Minor dirt can be easily removed from Afghan carpet, no expertise is required. A slightly damp cloth can be easily cleaned. Afghan carpets can be vacuumed at any time. However, as with all oriental carpets, vacuuming should be done in the direction of the fibre. The wool carpet's worst enemy is moths, so it is advisable to air it frequently, especially in summer, and to move the carpet occasionally to prevent moths from laying eggs underneath. If the carpet is heavily soiled, we recommend that you contact a professional carpet cleaning company. The greatest advantage of handmade carpets is that they can be restored.
