In Europe, this type of wool carpet has a completely different name, as it is called Ziegler in German and is the one that is most commonly used. Unfortunately, those who are not familiar with the types of oriental carpets often do not recognise them and incorrectly refer to them as Pakistani wool carpets. This is actually a misnomer. Just because an Afghan carpet is made in Pakistan does not make it an Afghan carpet - just think of famous sportswear brands. Around 50% of Ziegler wool carpets are made in Pakistan, but they are still Afghan wool carpets because they are knotted by Afghans living in Pakistan. Ziegler or Chobi means wood in Persian, meaning carpet made of wood. The brown colour is given to the Ziegler carpet by the nutshell. The burgundy colour is made from the skin of pomegranates. The black level is obtained from coal. The origin of the Ziegler wool carpet is Afghanistan. So Ziegler carpet is a type of Afghan wool carpet.
