The weaving of handmade rugs is traditionally done in the home (karkhana) in Afghanistan, while in Pakistan it is more often done in workshops. The weaving is based on warp yarns onto which the wool fibres are placed during the hand knotting process. At the end of the production process, the Afghan rugs are thoroughly washed to prevent colour bleeding. Once the rugs are completely dry, they are ready for export.
