How is an Afghan runner rug made?
The Afghan runner rug is made in northern Afghanistan, where the traditions of oriental carpet making are still alive. The production of wool runners is a complex process that begins with the careful selection of the sheep's wool. The quality of the wool is greatly influenced by the condition of the sheep's pastures, with the greenest, best maintained areas producing the finest wool. After shearing, the wool is divided into two different types: the outer layer, which is in contact with the outside world, is the basis for most Afghan rugs, while the inner layer, which is closer to the sheep's body, is used to make rugs with finer knots. The production of wool yarn takes several days. The dyeing is done with natural dyes that are boiled for a long time in vats. The yarns are dried in the warmth of the sun in summer and in artificial dryers in winter. The weaving of handmade rugs is traditionally done in the home (karkhana) in Afghanistan, while in Pakistan it is more often done in workshops. The weaving is based on warp yarns onto which the wool fibres are placed during the hand knotting process. At the end of the production process, the Afghan rugs are thoroughly washed to prevent colour bleeding. Once the rugs are completely dry, they are ready for export. Our representative offices in Afghanistan and Pakistan collect the finished products, which are shipped in bulk to CarpetDepo's carpet warehouse in Budapest, where we have been selling the rugs to our resellers and online customers since 1993. All our handmade runner rugs are guaranteed.
How to care for your Afghan runner carpet?
Cleaning your Afghan runner carpet does not require any special skills to remove everyday dirt. This type of dirt can be removed quickly and easily with a slightly damp cloth. Regular vacuuming is also recommended, but it is important to always vacuum in the direction of the fibres of the rug, which is generally recommended for all oriental rugs. For heavier soiling, you can use a carpet cleaning foam specifically designed to clean wool rugs. It is important to test the carpet cleaner on a small area first to ensure that it will not damage the material or colour of the rug. As with all wool rugs, moths are the biggest threat to Afghan rugs. Frequent airing, especially during the summer months, is therefore important, as is vacuuming under the rug from time to time to prevent moths from laying eggs underneath. For larger stains, it is worth hiring a professional carpet cleaner. Be careful not to place heavy furniture on the rug, especially if the furniture has sharp legs. In addition, one of the great advantages of Afghan carpets is that they can be repaired in Europe if something goes wrong, which ensures a longer life.
Two popular types of Afghan runners
The Khal Mohammadi and Kargai types, which are among the outstanding representatives of Afghan rugs, are justifiably popular. These woolen rugs are made using traditional hand-knotting techniques of the Turkmen communities of northern Afghanistan. Thanks to the war, it is common for these beautiful oriental rugs to be made by Turkmen weavers who have emigrated to Pakistan. The distinctive dark red and brown shades of these runners create an intense and warm atmosphere in any home.
The thickness of Khal Mohammadi and Kargai runners often varies depending on the method and extent of the shearing, but the quality is mainly determined by the density of the knotting and the quality of the materials used. The Afghan runner rug will retain its beauty and durability over time, thanks to a careful manufacturing process and, of course, depending on the care instructions.
With their richness of colours and patterns, these runners are the perfect way to add a unique character to living rooms, bedrooms or hallways. For corridors, we particularly recommend runner rugs with an elongated design and less width. They are the perfect choice for those looking for a practical yet aesthetically appealing solution for their corridor. Afghan runner rugs guarantee long-lasting beauty when placed in the hallway.
