The oriental carpet is not just the Persian carpet
Hand knotted Persian carpets are a carpet type with a rich history. The rich motifs and colours of oriental cultures are woven and knotted by professionals who are true masters of this tradition. As a result, each handmade Persian carpet is unique and no two are alike.
Persian carpets are carpets made in the Middle East and date back to Scythian-Nomadic times. Although the majority of these wool carpets are a product of oriental culture, their motifs combine Byzantine, Sasanian, Hellenistic and Chinese elements and have had a huge influence on European carpet making. Depending on their origin, their motifs may include plant or animal patterns, geometric shapes or human figures. The oldest surviving Persian carpet is the so-called Paziriki carpet from the 5th century BC.
Woven and knotted carpets
Persian carpets can be divided into two types according to the way they are made. Woven carpets, i.e. rag rugs, are made by stretching the warp threads lengthwise on the two horizontal bars of the loom, while the weft threads are passed horizontally. Woven carpets include sumac, Saracen, ikat, JA Jim, palas and kelim (rag rug).
For knotted carpets, the most important thing is that the knotting is uniformly dense. This is done by first making a base fabric on which invisible rows of knots are formed at the intersections of warp and weft yarns. The knotted rows are then pressed down with a special comb after the weft has been closed. Indian, Karabag, Polish, Armenian, Tebriz and Savonnerie carpets are made using the knotted technique.
