When you hear the term Persian carpet, you know that it is probably the best quality wool carpet in the world. Beautiful, soft, densely woven and each piece is unique because it is handmade. Let's see what else you should know about it!
Persian carpets originated in Iran and have a history of around 5000 years. What makes it special is that it is still made entirely by hand, with an incredibly dense weave. There are at least 90,000 knots per square metre, and the densest contains around one and a half million knots in the same area. The colours of Persian carpets carry meaning. Green is a sacred colour in Islamic countries, blue represents heaven, red represents wealth, white represents mourning and orange represents loyalty in Iran.
Last but not least, an interesting fact about Persian carpets: the largest Persian carpet was commissioned by an Arab sheikh. It is 2,000 square meters and weighs 45 tons. It is currently housed in a mosque.
